Chapter 10

Noah

“Oh man,” I groaned. “Oh man. This is not how I thought this morning would start.”

I lifted my head with difficulty off the seat of the toilet—so cold, so comfortable—and surveyed myself. I was sweating quite a bit, and could feel my hair stick to my forehead. My face felt cold and clammy, like a fish. Worst of all though, was the feeling that my stomach was turning itself inside out.

I was allergic to shellfish but I definitely hadn’t had any in the last twenty four hours—not even accidentally, because Gabriel had found out about my allergy and menaced everyone who worked in the kitchens into never serving any seafood ever again.

He could be a little overprotective.

But I’d read that allergies could spontaneously develop later in life. Narrowing down the possibilities for what was making me sick was going to suck.

I was squatting on the floor of the toilet, groaning and sweating and I probably looked like crap.

Someone could have snapped a picture of me and titled it ‘Royals: They’re Just Like Us!’ and it would have gone viral, I was sure.

I was an incongruous contrast to my surroundings.

Gabriel had insisted that I move into the palace from the hotel weeks ago, so I had an entire suite to myself. The bathroom alone was the size of my entire apartment back home.

The taps were gilded and the shower area was separated from the rest of the bathroom, which had its own velvet chaise lounge and plushly carpeted floor. It was as ridiculously luxurious as it sounded.

Eventually I scraped myself off the floor and thirstily gulped down water from the tap, splashing it on my face as well.

“Are you feeling okay?” Gabriel asked at once. I’d seen my reflection in the mirror before coming into the breakfast room. I knew I looked like hell.

“Fine,” I said grouchily, and looked unenthusiastically at the delicious spread in front of me,

Oddly, nothing was tempting me. I sat down and listlessly drank a cup of tea, answering Gabriel’s morning chatter with monosyllabic answers until even Lucas was looking at me with concern.

A few hours later, I was feeling almost back to normal again to Gabriel’s evident relief.

We spent the afternoon playing tennis, but I was so bad that I insisted on having Lucas play with me against Gabriel alone, who was very, very good.

“I was the number one ranked player in the country in university,” he said smugly one day.

“Out of maybe a dozen players in total, you mean?” I said witheringly, as Lucas shouted with laughter.

Gabriel still beat us handily, and the afternoon sunshine had made me hot and sweaty and tired, so I decided to go for a swim (yes, the palace had its own indoor swimming pool).

Maybe I was just wearing an itchy shirt or something, but my nipples were chafed like crazy from the moderate amount of running around I’d done in the afternoon.

The cold water was a blessed relief, and I groaned out loud as I sank into its depths.
